Final Creature Project

    There were a number of important things that I considered when I worked on  this final project. First, I knew I needed to apply the information and artistic techniques that I learned in class over the semester. Whenever there were parts of the drawing that receding in the back of the picture plane, I made sure to make these area light. It wouldn’t make sense if everything in the drawing was dark. Using atmospheric perspective prevented any areas from being flat since in real light nothing is flat. Furthermore, I create an overall gesture for the creature. I didn’t pay attention to details. What I wanted was to understand the form and shape of the create. Once that was done, I could then focus on the correct proportion and details.
The design of the Spider Crabino was no accident. I chose the spider crab because of it’s look. Everytime I look at this create words like errie, pacular, scary, and strange pop into my head. It fit perfect with what I wanted to say. Since the object I choose was a Alesisi Q25 Midi piano and I enjoy listening to bdubstep music thats why I choose the animal. Dubstep music can be errie and strange. The animal and the piano seemed to be made for each other.

For this project we are basing the meaning of our poster around the quote “Dream It. Achieve It.” The message is that while one sleeps their inner desires and aspirations come forth to promote a future goal of success. This success could be any sort of things depending on the goal you create while in slumber. The image is of a person sleeping, that representing its self. The drool flows into images of what success for this person might be, such as overcoming obstacles, becoming well known, and being the best they could be. Drool is usually associated with laziness, but it flows out of the body, as would an action the person would partake in. The drool is metaphoric in nature and design, showing flow, form, and is a visual pun. The drool itself is water, giving the subliminal feelings of movement, subconscious, wisdom, and calmness.
We each used our natural instincts and intuitive signposts to help direct our way through this project.  We were aware of each other’s strengths and weaknesses and used this to our advantage. We all have different preferences and experiences, but by using the elements and principals of design we managed to achieve synchronicity. We did some areas more simply while others are more detailed.  The simplicity of the background objects makes the main focus of the person sleeping and their dreams stand out.
Our project incorporates the golden ratio in our final design of the project.  We used it achieve beauty and balance in the design. For example, the drool that drips from the girl’s mouth is in the shape of the golden ratio.  The symbols in the drool represent the things that are important to the girl sleeping. The golden spiral in the drool shows outward growth. It represents her future accomplishments and her goals that she would like to achieve. In addition, the windows in the background are in the shape of the golden ratio. The 45-degree lines in the background give the images the illusion of depth and motion within a space that helps speak to the viewer
The lettering that we used in the drawing incorporates a three dimensional knowledge of space. Right above the drawing is the message of the entire poster. The sides of the letters can be seen. Some of the words even overlap each other. This reveals that the words aren’t two dimensional at all but actually 3d. They exist in a space that isn’t flat at all.
The forms in the wood show asymmetrical designs and get smaller the farther back into the picture they go. Symmetry designs can be found in the design on the wall.  The design in the background of the drool also shows symmetrical design. Our piece includes the three types of symmetry mentioned in the book.  The lines on the wall demonstrate translation symmetry because they slide along in specific direction for a specific amount of time.  The drool design contains reflection symmetry because if you flip it over a line it would appear unchanged.  That design also uses rotation symmetry to create a tessellation
We also used many elements and principals of design in our project.  We used the repetition of line to bring your eye across the piece and create a cohesive interesting design.  The direction and negative and positive space used in the background also help create a strong piece.  The piece is also balanced because we put the bed, which is the largest object in the middle of the piece.  Together the foreground, background and middle ground come together to create harmony.  We tried to use similar hues, tones and textures to make unified piece.  We also used analogous colors including yellow, blue and green.  We used complimentary and contrasting colors to make the piece more appealing to the eye as well.
The work shows a simple message using metaphors and symbols to express an overall idea that can be further thought on by the viewer. The images structure shows how well the three parts combine into one masterpiece. The entire image shows various elements that combine to create an elaborate illustration.

Project 7B. Blind Contour Painting

Assignment: Create asymmetry with color with intensity change.

I created asymmetry by making several blind contour sketches of my self. By drawing myself without looking at my self, I allowed myself to pay more attention to how I place lines down on the paper. I wasn’t worried about getting the drawing to look right. That wasn’t the assignment. I needed to capture some essence of myself. Furthermore, I imported the sketches into photoshop and began to ink the drawings. This process was quick. The next thing I did was begin to color my drawings. I added the complements of the colors in different parts of the drawing. I then started to slowly mix the complements together and place them in different parts of the painting. Doing this caused an intensity change. It showed how the colors could go from light to dark by just adding their complements.

Assignment: Create a tessellation using complementary color. Use color value to create a design variation on the tessellation. In addition, create intensity change to the tessellation.

For the project, I choice to use certain completementary colors. In the middle I used red and green, which are complements of each other. I then added a intensity change to it. The more of the complement I added to one color the dark it got. However, the less I used, the less dark the color got. Furthermore, throughout the painting I added other complementary colors. In some areas I add blue and orange. In others I add violet and yellow. The change from one to the other shows the intensity change.
There were several designs that I used in the painting. I added a rotational symbol in the middle. This can be done by rotating a symbol from another one that looks just like it. Next, I added a reflection symbol throughout the painting. Most of the symbols in the painting are reflection. Last, I added a translation symbol. It severed as the frame for the entire painting.

Wire Sculpture Project
Foundations Class
Tau I. Robinson-Farrar

The main goal of the project was to design a wire structure that used mainly of the design principals I’ve been taught in this class. This involved several things from me to think about. First, I wanted my design to say something. I didn’t just want to create a random object and that be the end of the project. I needed to create something about my life. About what I see and the object I use all the time. That is when it hit me. I decided to make a sculpture of the lamp. The lamp is a symbol of me personally. Whenever I am working on a project, watching a movie, or doing homework the lamp is there. It symbolizes my creativety and a piece of my everyday life.

Second, I created my drawing of the lamp as exact representation of the lamp. I made sure that the lines connected with each other. All the lines showed form and space in the drawing instead of a flat representation. In a way, the drawing was to be a blueprint for the actual sculpture. I could use the drawing to plan out the acutal construction of the wired sculpture.
